Use PC with portable monitorUpdated 9 days ago

In a narrower sense, what most people think of as a PC usually includes desktop computers, all-in-one PCs, and compact systems like Mini PCs or NUCs. Can all of these PCs be connected to a portable monitor? And what are the possible ways to connect each type? Before connecting a portable monitor like those from UPERFECT to your PC, it’s important to check if it is fully compatible. Here’s a simple guide combining what to look for and how to check it.

1. USB-C with DisplayPort Alternate Mode

What it is:

Many portable monitors use USB-C for both power and video signal. Not all PCs have USB-C ports, and even when they do, not every USB-C port supports video output.

Desktop PCPartial support

All-in-One PCPartial support

Mini PC / NUCMostly supportedMostlyEspecially in newer models

How to check:

  • Look for a small display icon (“DP” or "⚡" symbol) next to your USB-C port.
  • Check your PC’s specifications online for “DisplayPort Alternate Mode” support or "Thunderbolt 3/4" under USB-C features.
  • If unavailable, move to the HDMI option.

2. HDMI Connection

What it is:

Almost all PCs come with an HDMI port, which offers a reliable way to connect portable monitors. PC HDMI ports typically support HDMI 1.4 to HDMI 2.1 for video output. However, older versions such as HDMI 1.2 and below do not support modern resolutions like 4K or refresh rates like 60Hz. While they can output video, their functionality is limited.

How to check:

  • Locate the HDMI output port on your PC.
  • Check if the PC's HDMI port supports a version higher than HDMI 1.4. If not, it just up to 1080p or 720p resolution.

3. VGA Port

What it is:

If the device hasn't been upgraded with an HDMI port for video output, users will need to use a converter to connect older interfaces like VGA or DVI to HDMI. That said, since around 2008, most desktop PCs and graphics cards have come equipped with HDMI ports by default. As a result, only a small number of users today actually need these types of conversion accessories to connect to a monitor.

How to check:

  •  Make sure the adapter specifically supports VGA to HDMI conversion.

4. Monitor Settings Configuration

What it is:
After connecting the monitor, your PC needs to detect and configure the new display.

How to check:

  • On Windows: Right-click the desktop → Display settings → Detect displays
  • On macOS: System Settings → Displays → Add Display
  • Adjust resolution and display mode (Extend, Mirror, or Second Screen Only) as needed.
